History

The Blinn College District History Department offers an Associate of Arts in History that transfers to the state’s leading universities, including Texas A&M University, Sam Houston State University, the University of Houston, and Texas State University, and the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV).

In addition to the Associate of Arts Degree, Blinn’s History Department offers seven courses that meet the American History requirement in the Texas Core Curriculum : HIST 1301: United States History I, HIST 1302: United States History II, HIST 2301: Texas History, HIST 2327: Mexican American History I, HIST 2328: Mexican American History II, HIST 2381: African American History I, and HIST 2382: African American History II.

As president of Furman University from 1994-2010, Shi helped solidify the institution’s reputation as one of the nation’s finest liberal arts colleges and a leader in promoting sustainability. Shi also taught at Davidson College in North Carolina for 17 years, a post which included serving as chair of the history department.

The Associate of Arts in History can be completed online and on the Brenham, Bryan, RELLIS, Schulenburg, and Sealy campuses.

Blinn courses are highly transferrable, and recent history graduates have transferred to Texas A&M, Sam Houston State, Texas State, the University of North Texas, the University of Texas at Austin, and more.

Students who earn an associate degree in history can find employment in a variety of roles, including historical research assistant, museum technician or curatorial assistant, archival assistant, historical tour guide, education outreach coordinator, and a content writer or editor.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), archivists, curators, and museum workers earned a median salary of $50,120 per year in 2021.
